Buhari rejects Fashola's candidate for NERC chair

President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly stunned Babatunde Fashola, the minister of Works, Power and Housing, following his decision to nominate Akintunde Ibitayo Akinwande, as the executive chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly stunned Babatunde Fashola, the minister of Works, Power and Housing, following his decision to nominate Akintunde Ibitayo Akinwande, as the executive chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
Shasore was one of the aspirants reportedly supported by Fashola for the APC governorship ticket in the 2015 governorship election. However, he and Femi Amzat, Fashola’s commissioner for works, were defeated by Akinwunmi Ambode, the preferred candidate of Bola Tinubu, a national leader of APC. Following Ambode’s victory at the poll, the relationship between Tinubu and Fashola has not improved since then, and it was widely reported last year that Tinubu did not support the appointment of Fashola as minister because of their strained relationship. However, a presidency insider told The Cable: “Shasore was dropped because the president does not want anything that will stoke tension in the Lagos axis again.” According to the source, Buhari personally sought out the NERC nominees as he is doing in critical areas of his administration. He said: “The president’s expectation is that with more professionals in his team, including those from the Diaspora, he will be able to deliver the goods in these critical areas.”With his nomination, Akinwande will succeed Sam Amadi whose tenure ended in 2015. It was gathered that Buhari sent Akinwade’s name and other nominees to the Senate for confirmation before they embarked on their long recess on Thursday, July 21. Other nominees include: Musiliu Olalekan Oseni (Southwest nominee), Dafe C. Akpeneye (South-South nominee), Okafor Frank Nwoye (Southeast nominee), Sanusi Garba (Northwest nominee), Nathan Rogers Shatti (Northeast nominee), Moses Arigu (North-Central nominee). NERC, which regulates the power sector, is key to the resolution of the electricity crisis as the government has already privatised distribution and generation entities. It is under the control of the federal government and it is currently being managed by Manitoba of Canada on contractual basis.

'Why Babangida overthrew my government 31 years ago' - Buhari

President Buhari in a yet to be released interview with The Interview magazine, revealed he was removed from office 31 years ago because he was planning to purge the military of corruption.

In the interview, President Buhari said senior military leaders, led by former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida and General Aliyu Gusau, removed him in August 1985, to save themselves from his wrath.

He challenged Babangida and Gusau to tell Nigerians the truth on why they carried out the coup against him.

“I learnt that Aliyu Gusau, who was in charge of intelligence, took import license from the Ministry of Commerce which was in charge of supplies and gave it to Alhaji Mai Deribe. It was worth N100,000, a lot of money at that time. I confronted them and took the case to the Army council in a memo…I wanted Gusau punished.”

However former military leader, Ibrahim Babangida had told The Interview in its December edition that there was nothing in the memo which Buhari said he submitted to the Army council.

“Don’t forget that I was one of Buhari’s closest aides. I was the chief of army staff. So, I had an important position, an important role to play within that administration. I don’t think it had to do with a memo” Babangida said.

But in a tone which revealed that the past may neither have been forgotten nor forgiven, Buhari in this recent interview, challenged Babangida and Gusau to come clean on why they removed him. Buhari assumed office as military leader on December 31st 1983, after he and his loyalists overthrew the government of Shehu Shagari.

Two years later on August 27th 1985, President Buhari’s rule was ended by Babangida in a coup. In a statement on The Interview magazine's website, the Managing Director/Editor-in-chief, Azu Ishiekwene, said, “This is one edition that won’t let sleeping dogs lie.”

Hold Wike responsible for INEC office fire – APC

The All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, has urged security agencies to hold Governor Nyesom Wike responsible for Friday’s arson on Independent National Electoral Commission’s office in Bori.
This is contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Saturday by the Chairman of APC in the state, Chief Davies Ikanya.
INEC office in Bori, Khana Local Government Area of the state was gutted by fire on Friday.
The party alleged that the election umpire’s office was burnt down by hoodlums suspected to be the Peoples Democratic Party members.
It said Wike had on Thursday, publicly threatened INEC, its Chairman, Ikanya and Sen. Magnus Abe.
According to the statement, just less than 24 hours after the threat, INEC office in Sen. Abe’s South-East Senatorial District Headquarters, Bori, was burnt down.
“This is typical of the saying that the witch cried last night and today, the child dies. Wike has, as usual, carried out his earlier threat to visit us with fire.
“We now know better what he meant. His boys burnt INEC office in Bori just because Bori is the senatorial headquarters of Rivers South-East where Sen. Magnus Abe hails from,” the APC said.
It alleged that Wike was encouraging killing, maiming and destruction of lives and properties for the sake of political power.
“We warned that whenever Wike resorts to throwing mud at innocent people and making unwholesome accusations, he must be up to his familiar sinister games; today, it has manifested in its fullness.
“Security agents should ignore his attempts to blame this heinous act on the APC or anyone else; it was obviously planned by Wike and clinically executed by his foot soldiers,” the statement added.

Only JAMB can admit students into universities – Education Ministry

The Federal Ministry of Education yesterday said only the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) can admit students into universities. The ministry also said universities had no business admitting candidates other than those sent to it by JAMB but could screen candidates to remove those with anti-social traits and suspicious credentials. The Director, Press and Public Relations, in the ministry, Mr. Ben Bem Goong, also denied media reports that the earlier decision to cancel post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) was upturned. He said while the ban on post-UTME stayed, screening was only for those admitted by JAMB and limited to examination of credentials and physical examination of candidates to ensure that they are not cultists. “All these should be done upon resumption. No university is allowed to have anything to do with any applicant who is not its student. Screening and registration are only for those who have been admitted by JAMB,” he said.

He was initially given a five-year term for manslaughter, but was found guilty of murder on appeal last December.
He was taken immediately to jail. Both the prosecution and defence can appeal, but his lawyers say they will not.
Pistorius, 29, shot Reeva Steenkamp four times through a locked toilet door in February 2013.
He admitted shooting her, but said he had mistaken Ms Steenkamp for an intruder and acted out of fear.

Euro 2016: Wales set for historic semi-final with Portugal

Image for the news result
Wales are preparing for the biggest game in their history when they play Portugal in Lyon on Wednesday for a place in the final of Euro 2016.
Chris Coleman's side have already enjoyed a memorable run to reach their first semi-final at their only major tournament since 1958.
England are the only British team to have reached the final of a World Cup or European Championship, 50 years ago.
"We'll be the underdogs, but we believe in each other," said manager Coleman.
Jonathan Ford, chairman of the Football Association of Wales, told BBC Sport: "It is history in the making, it's a dream come true.
"These players will run through brick walls for us. This has been a fantastic demonstration of team spirit, team morale, teamwork.
"Sport and culture are the two things that really help us define Wales and the Welsh people."
More than half of Wales' population of three million are expected to watch their country take on regular European semi-finalists Portugal - eclipsing the national television record for a sporting event, which was only set on Friday for their 3-1 quarter-final victory over Belgium.
The Prince of Wales sent the team a "huge good luck" message, saying: "I'm sure they have got a very good chance of beating Portugal. Everyone here will be keeping their fingers crossed."

JAMB adopts point system option for 2016 admissions

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has announced the release of its guidelines for the 2016 admissions’ process.
The method, described as the point system option, was adopted after an extensive one-week meeting JAMB had with universities and other tertiary institutions’ administrators  in the country.
According to the guidelines contained in a statement placed on its website on Monday night, JAMB said that the modalities were going to be based on point system.
While explaining how the admission process would work for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidates and direct entry students, the organisation stated that universities were going to charge fees for screening of candidates at the end of the process for admission.
According to JAMB, the new method uses a point system to offer provisional admission to candidates.
“Before a candidate can be considered for screening, he/she must have been offered a provisional admission by JAMB. The JAMB admission checker portal is going to be opened soon for this process, so praying is all you can do now,” JAMB said.
The second process, it said, was the point system where admission would depend on the point tally of the candidate.
The statement said, “JAMB’s provisional admission no longer makes much sense this year, your points tally will decide your faith. The points are evenly spread out between your O’ Level and JAMB results to provide a level-playing field for all.
“In the first case, any candidate who submits only one result which contains his/her relevant subjects already has 10 points. The exam could be NECO, WASSCE, November/December WASSCE etc, but any candidate who has two sittings only gets 2 points. So this means that candidates with only one result are at an advantage but only just.”
The organisation added that the “next point grades fell into the O’ Level grades where each grade would have it equivalent point;  A=6 marks, B=4 marks, C=3 marks, so the better the candidates’  grades, the better his or her  chances of securing admission this year.
“The next point is the UTME scores where each score range has its equivalent point which can be summarised thus, 180-200=20-23 marks, 200-250=24-33 points, 251-300=34-43, 300-400=44-60 points,” JAMB explained.
Giving a breakdown, JAMB explained that each category would contain five JAMB results per point added.
For example a candidate with 180-185 gets 20 points, while a candidate with 186-190 gets 21 points.
JAMB added that the point system for direct entry would be released soon.
JAMB stated that fees would still be charged for screening which would replace the Post UTME test.
JAMB also emphasised that catchment and educationally less-developed state would still be used for admission into the nation’s tertiary institutions.
JAMB said, “Merit contains 45 per cent of the total candidates for a particular course, Catchment contains 35 per cent and ELDS and staff lists contains the rest. Cut off marks will be released by the institutions this year in the form of points and not marks.
“If a school declares its cut off mark for Medicine as 90 points and JAMB grants a candidate with 250 a provisional admission but his/her total points falls short of the 90 points, then he/she will lose the admission. So the provisional admission is just a means to an end, not the end in itself.”

“Boys, you are wasting too much of your time in front of that television. You don’t get an education when staring at television all the time. I’d asked the lord for wisdom and he has told me what to do. From now on, you will not watch television, except for two preselected programs each week, and that will be after you might have done your homework. Furthermore, you don’t play outside after school, either, until you’ve done all your homework. In addition, you have to read two books from the library each week and when you finish reading them, you must write me a book report about the books. You are not living up to your potentials, and I am going to see that you do.” Sonya Carson tells her sons, Curtis and Benjamin. If there is anyone who will always believe in his/her ability to succeed and has faith in God, it is Sonya Carson. "Learn to do your best and God will do the rest” was her life motto. In spite of the hardships she passed through, having married at the young age of thirteen to a man who eventually deserted her and her two sons, she believed that she would eventually make it in life and determined her two sons would also succeed. Ben Carson would always attribute his success to his mother, Sonya. "I not only saw and felt the difference my mother made in my life; I am still living out that difference as a man." Says the renowned Neurosurgeon. Sonya Carson believed her sons could make it and she stirred up the gem in them. She put her total self into making sure her sons did their best in school. Oftentimes, she worked long hours and two to three jobs to keep the Carson family afloat. Her relationship and dependence on the Lord provided her with the wisdom to raise her boys to graduate from high school, college, and become successful men. She did this while living as a single mom in the interior cities of Boston and Detroit. "I don't have any friends. I don't have anyone else to turn to. God, you're going to have to be my friend, my best friend.  And, you're going to have to tell me how to do things and give me wisdom, because I don't know what to do” Sonya prays to God. She believed in God having accepted the gospel on the hospital bed. Sonya Carson was a woman of faith. My sons are going to be something. They are going to learn to be self-supporting and learn how to love other folks. And no matter what they decide to be, they are going to be the best in the world at it.” says Sonya to a woman who confronted her about her methods of child training. She loves her children. “Lord, if you can take nothing and make a world out of it, you can take my situation and make it work – for the boys’ sake.  I don’t care so much about myself, but my boys need help.  They deserve a chance.”  She has a saying; “You can do anything anyone else can do. Only you can do it better.” And she made her sons to believe it. Sonya Carson overcame hardship, poverty, single- motherhood, and depression to work hard to raise two sons in the inner cities. In turn, these boys grew up to be successful men, as she believed they would be, because she lived out her motto, "Learn to do your best. God will do the rest."

Ramadan fasting continues - Sultan of Sokoto tells muslims.

sultan of sokoto

The Sultan of Sokoto and president-general, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), AlhaJi Sa’ad Abubakakar III, has declared Wednesday, July 6, as Eid-el-Fitr day in Nigeria. The Sultan’s announcement follows report of no sign of the new moon of Shawwal 1437 in any part of the country. According to him, being that the moon hasn’t been sighted, Muslims in the country should fast on Tuesday, July 5 and observe the Eid prayers on Wednesday, July 6. A statement signed by the chairman, Sultanate Advisory Committee on Islamic Affairs, Prof. Sambo Junaidu, reads in part: “Sultanate Advisory Committee on Moon Sighting, after holding its meeting at the Sultanate Palace today (yesterday) Monday, 04/07/2016, which is equivalent to the 29th day of Ramadan 1437 AH, affirmed that there is no report of new moon being sighted by all the committees across the federation. “On the strength of that, the Sultan of Sokoto adopted the report of moon not sighted anywhere and declared that Wednesday, the 6th of July, which signifies the completion of 30 days circle of this year’s Ramadan, will be the first day of Shawwal (Eid el-Fitr). The Sultan further prayed that Almighty Allah accept the prayers and acts of worship being practised by all Muslim faithful across the globe. We recalls that he had on Sunday, July 3 asked every Muslim in the country to look for the new moon between Sunday and Monday for the Eid el-Fitri. Some countries like Saudi Arabia and Indonesia had earlier announced Wednesday as Eid-el-Fitri day. The celebrations are used to mark the end of the month-long Ramadan fast.

He said: 'I am thankful to god that everyone loves me so much. I don't mind a few bullies as they bring some fun to life.
