Confusion as Saraki Sworn in two Senators from the same constituency

The Senate has been hit with credibility crisis over the swearing in of two different persons to represent a single senatorial district. The two persons, Mustapha Sani Mohammed and Gen. (rtd) Mohammed A. Garba who are both claiming to have won the election underthe All Progressives Congress have been sworn in to represent Niger south senatorial district,Daily Trust reports. It was gathered that Garba was sworn in at the inauguration of the 8th Senate on June 9 while Mustapha was sworn in last week Wednesday, August 12,2015, by the Senate president, Bukola Saraki for the same position. According to sources, the Senate president decision was said to have been influenced by his associates to swear in Mustapha for theposition even when Garba is yet to constitutionally vacant the seat. However, Ibrahim Tukur El-Sudi, special adviser on legal and constitutional matter, said the confusion arises from lack of information from the judiciary. The two contenders are currently at the appeals court over the issue. It was gathered that the problem startedduring nomination from the senatorial district. Mustapha was the first to be nominated but when his membership ofAPC was challenged, his name was reportedly substituted with that of Garba who went on to win the general election. However, Mustapha has gone to court to challenged Garba’s claim to the seat saying that he was the legally elected senator as he was the original nominee of the party. The case was still in court when Mustapha was sworn in before the court could take decision on the dispute. Senate president legal aide said that Saraki was not aware that someone from the same senatorial district was earlier sowrn in but promised that investigation would be carried out. “Before Mustapha was sworn in, we wrote to the Supreme and appeals courts, asking whether there was application on the senatorial district. The Supreme Court replied (to) our letter on the 7th August, the following day after we wrote to them. “The Supreme Court said there was no any pending application, but the appeals court did not reply (to) our letter until on 12th of this month, just hours after Mustapha has been sworn in. “It was the appeals court that told usthat there was a pending application on the seat. We acted because we thought nothing was pending,” El-Sudi said.

NAIRA NOW 217 PER DOLLAR

Naira notesThe naira appreciated against the United States dollar at the parallel market on Monday to 217, from 221 recorded on Friday. The naira rose on the back of weak demand for the dollar at the foreign exchange markets.Forex traders linked this to an improved dollar liquidity occasioned by the sustained sales of the greenback by the Central Bank of Nigeria.Reacting to the rising fortune of the local currency, the Acting President, Association of Bureau De Change Operators, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, said, “The market has started feeling the effect of the dollar sales by the central bank in the last two weeks and tight measures introduced to prevent cross boarder currency trafficking.”The CBN had increased the frequency of dollar sales to the BDC operators two weeks ago to twice-weekly from the usualonce a week previously in a move meant to increase liquidity in the market and support the local currency.Traders said bank customers were no longer willing to hold dollars after the central bank banned dollar cash deposits into domiciliary accounts.“We expect to see more rallies in the market if the central bank could sustain its support for the naira,” Harrison Owoh, abureau de change operator said, Reuters reported. The naira was unchanged at the official interbank market at 197 to the dollar, where the CBN has maintained a tight control by pegging it to the rate of 197 to the dollarThe naira had weakened on the parallel market to as much as 245 to the dollar last month, on persistent dollar demand after central bank limited importers’ access to dollars on the official interbank market to buy a wide range of goods, in order to save the external reserves. The local currency later rebounded to 216 at the parallel market as Deposit Money Banks started rejecting cash deposits in dollars a few weeks ago.The naira had, however, weakened to about 223 last week before rising to 217 on MondayAnalysts expect the naira to continue rising, saying it is good for the economy. The Head, Investment and Research, Afrinvest West Africa, Mr. Ayodeji Ebo, hadsaid that the gains made by the naira was good for the economy, adding that it would help the CBN to gauge the true value of the currency in the event of a possible devaluation in the near future.“If there is a convergence between the interbank and parallel market, the CBN may possibly review its restrictions imposed on the forex market,” he added.A currency analyst at Ecobank Nigeria, Mr.Kunle Ezun, said if the trend continued, the naira might rise to as much as 200 against the dollar.Copyright PUNCH.

I HAVE NEVER BEEN SICK

Victor UwaifoVeteran musician, Sir Victor Uwaifo, fondlyknown as the guitar boy, in a chat with Saturday Beats revealed that he has neverfallen ill in his life.He said that he understands his body and exercises regularly to avoid breaking down.“I don’t know what they call headache; I don’t know what it means to have stomach upset. I have never been sick in my life and I thank God for that because it is not by my power but by the grace of God. I also do my best to keep my health. Ihave never smoked in my life. Cigarette has never touched my lips, let alone smoke it. I don’t drink until recently when Istarted drinking red wine. I only drink when I eat. I have been taking beverages all my life for the past 60 years and I still take them. Sometimes, I take up to three bottles a day. When people talk of diabetes, I laugh because it cannot happen to me. You don’t have to be afraid of diabetes if you regulate your system. I do exercises to burn the sugar. I don’t have to see a doctor to tell me what I needto keep me fit. I am not used to taking drugs,” he said.He also said that he found it offensive when people ask him when he would retire because he would continue doing his music till he dies.He said, “Thinking of retirement means that I am limiting myself. I am just startingmy career. Even when I clock 90 years old,I would still be doing most of the things I am doing now. It is offensive to say that I would retire.”
