IT'S BEEN COMING

For all the talk of Manchester United’s revival in recent weeks almost all of their Premier League victories at home have been unconvincing. But against Hull City at Old Trafford on Saturday they produced their most accomplished performance of the season, and it bodes well for Louis van Gaal’s evolution of this side. Against the likes of Crystal Palace, West Ham and Everton United haven’t effectively controlled matches on home turf, despite acquiring the points on all three occasions. That trio of victories came virtue of a world class-selection of players pushing the result over the line in the face of opposition frustration. On all three occasions endeavour and a little bit of luck were required to reach the desired result. In short, there was a lack of domination. After dismantling Hull, Van Gaal was at pains to use that word regularly in his post-match analysis, and with just cause. “We have dominated the game from the first minute to the last minute,” the Dutchman told reporters. “It was our best match and when you see the full 90 minutes, we dominated, we created many chances and we didn’t give any chances away. “We are on the right way.” In stark contrast to those other performances, and indeed to those under David Moyes, United were comfortable in every capacity. Hull heavily contributed to their own downfall with their ineptness in possession and blanket disorganisation, happy to cede territory in hope of grimly holding on. But United have been left exasperated in similar circumstances post-Sir Alex, so it was refreshing to observe them step out with a confidence and incision that was simply too much for the visitors. Even Angel Di Maria’s early substitution through injury couldn’t shake them from their stride; his replacement Ander Herrera was excellent, a metronome as efficient as they come. Juan Mata enjoyed operating as the furthest forward of the midfield line, while Wayne Rooney’s killer goal before half-time was a typical effort that echoed the Rooney of old. And Robin van Persie, under pressure and with performances particularly scrutinised, got the "wonderful goal" Van Gaal suggested might prove a boost to his morale. His clinical strike into the top corner sealed victory and earned him a standing ovation when replaced by Radamel Falcao – that in itself another positive for a manager whose options have been drastically limited by an injury list that never seems to recede. Perhaps the performance and result over Arsenal seven days ago – the first away win for over seven months - has instilled belief in a squad tinged with fragility. Progress is always founded in results, and this was a third consecutive three points, but to be able to dictate the play so completely moves the development of this Manchester United to the next level, benchmarking what they should be able to do to sides of Hull’s calibre each and every time. Fans will begin to demand it, and the familiarity of United’s incessant attacks from first minute to last as the anticipation builds will begin to reassemble. The fortress will rebuild. Visiting boss Steve Bruce called it a “difficult afternoon”, which puts him as front-runner for the understatement of the year award, and while his team were indeed poor, United were ruthless and unforgiving, even with only two recognised defenders on the field - one of which, Chris Smalling, has recovered with excellence following his red card calamity in the Manchester derby. Van Gaal couldn’t have asked for a more positive afternoon. As December approaches and the season settles into a pattern, it seems that after such upheaval, United are doing just the same. Fourth place, and on an upward trajectory; this is where they need to be.

US sees slower Black Friday sales

The traditional scrum of sharp elbows was notably less intense on Black Friday in the US this year. The crowds, gathering at the US's big shopping centres, appeared to have exhausted some of their shopping enthusiasm on Thursday. As last year, many retailers had opened their doors early to try to pull shoppers in ahead of rivals. "The consumer clearly enjoys shopping on Thanksgiving," said Target's chief executive, Brian Cornell. And, when opening the New York Stock Exchange for Friday's shortened day of trading, he welcomed the way the holiday season "has moved from an event on Black Friday morning to a multi-day event." Many shoppers headed straight to the shops whilst still digesting their Thanksgiving turkey on Thursday, forming queues outside Macy's by 6pm on what is becoming known as "grey Thursday".

HAPPY BLACK FRIDAY

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States(the fourth Thursday of November), often regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. In recent years, most major retailers have opened very early and offered promotional sales to kick off the holiday shopping season, similar to Boxing Daysales in many Commonwealth nations. Black Friday is not a holiday, but California and some other states observe "The Day After Thanksgiving" as a holiday for state government employees, sometimes in lieu of another federal holiday such as Columbus Day.

Kumuyi asks Nigerians to ‘screen’ politicians before voting

The General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor William Kumuyi, has urged Nigerians to critically examine the manifesto of those seeking elective offices. He said this would help to determine their suitability or otherwise for election in 2015. Kumuyi gave this advice while speaking to newsmen in Ilorin. The religious leader was in llorin for the take-off of a three-day crusade by his church at Eyenkorin, on the outskirts of the state capital. The cleric described as ‘mere speculations’, insinuations about the possible break-up of Nigeria after the elections. He asked Nigerians to separate “pronouncements” from “prophecies” about the future of the country. Kumuyi said Nigerians must put hands together to elect people who would do the will of the majority in 2015. He reminded political leaders to understand that they came into office for the good of the people. Kumuyi described his visit to the north central state as one meant beyond religion and ethnicity, saying he was sure God loved the people of Kwara and had seen what they might be passing through. The cleric said, “Let there be enlightenment; let the media tell us this is where Nigeria ought to be. For instance, we all want an economically stable country. “We should look at the manifesto of politicians and pick the ones that will deliver, that will help the people. We should not pick just because of religion or ethnicity. “If we vote for the right people, this country will be great and our politicians must always remember that they are in office for the people.”

NFF: WE CAN DO NOTHING

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) explained they could not fire the Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi from his position saying their hands were tied. According to a board member, the football body leadership is “helpless” in the situation. “The last time we did what we thought was best, we were forced to revert the changes by people in high places. This time around we are helpless. We are scared of announcing we won’t renew his deal due to what happened last time and unless he resigns or walks away we can’t help out.”

Sierra Leone: Ebola burial team dumps bodies

Workers employed by Sierra Leone's Ministry of Health to bury Ebola victims took drastic action this week in a dispute over pay, abandoning the bodies of 15 people in the street. Some were paraded at the entrance to a hospital Monday to stop people from entering. Another body was placed outside the entrance to a hospital administrative building. The workers have gone on strike because they say they are owed seven weeks of their "hazard" pay of $100 a week. Burying Ebola victims is a dangerous task, since the deadly virus is spread through contact with bodily fluids. The bodies were all cleared as of Tuesday after burial teams working for the Red Cross, rather than the state, were called in. The National Ebola Response Center has announced the sacking of all involved in the strike, said Sidi Yahyah Tunis, a spokesman for the center. Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea are the three West African countries at the heart of the current Ebola outbreak. The vast majority of more than 15,000 Ebola cases and more than 5,000 deaths caused by the virus in recent months have occurred in those three nations, according to a World Health Organization report out Friday.

UNIJOS Releases Notice on Indefinite Closure of the School

On Monday November 24, 2014 students of the University of Jos embarked on a peaceful demonstration against certain issues. Management met and issued a release assuring students and members of the University Community that some of the issues raised by the students were nothing but rumours that had no basis. However, certain steps were taken to address all the grievances including the shifting of the Second Semester Examinations with one (1) week and the setting up of a Committee to look at the other issues. This morning, Tuesday November 25, 2014 students mobilized themselves again and blocked the Bauchi Road Highway and set tyres on fire. In order to avoid further escalation of the situation, Management met this morning and directed that the University should be closed down until further notice. Students are hereby directed to vacate the hostels on or before 2pm. Please ensure that this directive is strictly complied with. Jilli-Dandam D. Esq. Registrar

Qatar 2022 World Cup: Michel Platini wants winter staging

UEFA President Michel Platini has told BBC Sport the 2022 Qatar World Cup must be played in winter.
Michel Platini

The Frenchman's stance puts him in direct opposition to some of Europe's biggest leagues and clubs, who want the event to be staged in May.
The World Cup is usually held in June and July, but Fifa has been told that Qatar's searing summer temperatures will put players' health at risk.
Platini said: "It'll never be in April, May or June. It will be in winter."
He added the 2022 Champions League semi-finals and final could be moved to June if necessary, saying the clubs would accept whatever decision was made.
"It's not the clubs that are playing, it's the players and it's not possible to play in May when it's 40 degrees," said Platini, 59.

The English Premier League, Spain's La Liga and the German Bundesliga think a May World Cup will cause the least disruption as Fifa attempts to find an alternative date to June and July.
But the favourite dates are either November and December or January and February.
Football's most influential figures met in Zurich on Monday in an attempt to agree a solution to one of the sport's most controversial dilemmas, and plan to meet again in January.
The taskforce set up to look into this issue will then present its preferred option to Fifa's executive committee in March.
Fifa's preference is for a switch to November and December.
President Sepp Blatter has already agreed that a World Cup will not clash with the Winter Olympics, which appears to rule out a move to January and February.
But Uefa, which governs European football, is opposed on the grounds it would impact on the Champions League group stages, a stance backed by the Premier League.
Many North American and South American domestic seasons conclude about this time, too.

When will the 2022 World Cup take place?

"On the basis that what Fifa wants, Fifa normally gets, a tournament in November/December must still be considered the probable outcome. There will be those who make very strong arguments for January/February and it should not be ruled out yet."
Speaking during a tour of the Football Association's training base at St George's Park in Staffordshire, Platini said: "As president of Uefa, I have no problem whether it's in November, December, January or February.
"I have no problem. For the competition of the Champions League, we have no problem.
"Your clubs in England, your league (the Premier League) has a problem… but we have to find a compromise. Everybody has to lose something but in the end I think winter will be a good date.
"It will not be in April, it will not be in May or June or July or September. It will be November, December or January."
When asked how regrettable it was that the issue had still not been finalised four years after Fifa's executive committee voted for Qatar, Platini said: "It's not regrettable for me. I don't regret voting for Qatar."
He also rejected any suggestion the World Cup's credibility had been damaged by the Qatar controversy.
"I don't think so," he said. "I've always said that I hope it will be in Qatar in winter. A lot of people voted for Qatar, not only me."
Platini insisted Qatar was the right choice because Arab countries had bid for the World Cup before and missed out.
Qatar says it is happy to stage the World Cup at any time of year
Qatar says it is happy to stage the 2022 World Cup at any time of year
"The Arabic people, seven times they lose the World Cup," he said. "It was time to give them the World Cup. I am for that. It's my conviction."
Platini was also asked whether Blatter had been wrong to promise the International Olympic Committee that there would be no clash with a Winter Games.
"I don't know," said the former France international midfielder.
"There will be an official decision soon. I hope soon because Qatar needs to know when they are going to organise this competition. We'll find a compromise."
Fifa's ethics adjudicator Hans Joachim Eckert is studying lawyer Michael Garcia's report into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding process after corruption allegations were made against the Qatar 2022 bid.
Asked if he still believed Qatar will host the 2022 tournament, Platini said: "If there is some problem of corruption, we have to make another vote. If not, why would we have to change?"
During Wednesday's trip, Platini also discussed Financial Fair Play, Blatter's bid for a fifth term as Fifa president and St George's Park.

Platini on Blatter

The Uefa president reinforced his association's view that Blatter should not seek a fifth term in office in next year's election.
Blatter promised not to stand again when he was last re-elected in 2011, but has since declared he will be a candidate in 2015.
Former Fifa executive Jerome Champagne is the only person to have declared an intention to stand against him.

Platini says it is "possible" Blatter could be beaten in next year's Fifa presidential election
"I said many times that I will not support him any more because he asked European football to vote for him for a last time," said Platini.
"After 40 years being involved as the general secretary and president, it's time to have something fresh.
"I am part of Fifa as vice-president, but the image is not so good.
"For the fame of Fifa all over the world, to have better transparency, to have better governance, I think it's time Sepp let his seat."
Asked if he believed Blatter could be beaten, Platini replied: "I hope so. It's possible."

Platini on Financial Fair Play

Uefa made its first Financial Fair Play (FFP) rulings this year, withManchester City and Paris St-Germain among nine clubs punished.
Platini pushed for the introduction of FFP to prevent clubs that qualify for Uefa competitions spending beyond their means, and to stamp out what he calls "financial doping" in football.
He denied some major clubs were opposed to the idea, but acknowledged the system may need to be altered.

Money matters

Uefa made its first FFP rulings based on club accounts from 2011-12 and 2012-13. Under this monitoring period, total losses of €45m (£37m) were permitted, as long as clubs had owners who can cover such amounts.
"There are not a lot of critics," he said. "There were some clubs who were not so happy, not about the FFP but they were not so happy about the criteria of FFP.
"By example, PSG said there are very, very many taxes in France. And at first they said: 'We would like to have a different judgement about what we have to pay.'
"Nobody will criticise the FFP, but they want to have some accommodations about this."
Platini said former Manchester United chief executive David Gill, now chairman of Uefa's club licensing committee, oversaw a meeting at which possible changes to the system were discussed.
"The committee will propose to the executive committee if there is something to judge or not," he added.

St George's Park

Platini was impressed by the FA's national football centre, which opened in 2012.
"It is very beautiful, it is modern, it's new, it is very well done," he said.
"Now you have everything, you have to put the quality inside to grow football. But I think for a great country of football like England there is the need for something like that.
"If you educate better players, you will have in your club better players. It means that it is a very good centre to develop football in England."
